SNorman2 Log from Meebo Chat one

Mandy?

[19:02] susanreads: I'm here when you're ready:)

[19:04] dempseym73: I'm here finally, too!

[19:04] susanreads: Yeah! We did it!

[19:04] susanreads: Hey, did you see our grade? A perfect 50!

[19:05] dempseym73: That's not always a sure thing. When I was completing another collaborative assignment for another class, half the time I couldn't log on. Sometimes I really hate technology!

[19:06] susanreads: Me, too! If we have a lot of problems, I'll just call you. I only like technology if it really helps--I don't want us to get bogged down on meebo just for the sake of doing tech., you know? Even Dr. M has complained about meebo, but so far, so good.

[19:07] susanreads: What do you think about this lesson idea:

[19:07] susanreads: I've done it several times during Thanksgiving season with fourth graders:

[19:08] susanreads: Have you ever seen these books: Sarah Morton, The Life of a Pilgrim Girl, and the other book, Samuel Morton, the Life of a Pilgrim Boy?

[19:08] dempseym73: I am not familiar with these, but I can get copies and read them if necessary.

[19:09] susanreads: I bet your local library has them. They have pictures of a real little girl and a real little boy from the Plymouth Plantation museum...

[19:10] susanreads: They are actors that people really can go see...see the actors"living" like Pilgrims would have lived...

[19:10] dempseym73: Sounds interesting. What is the lesson idea? Is there a website for these actors? Can we incorporate this in our lesson as an extension?

[19:10] susanreads: Anyway, using photographs of these children, and text that is narrated by the children, they tell about one day in their life...

[19:11] susanreads: w

[19:11] susanreads: Wow--that is an excellent idea; I've never looked; that's something we can check on.

[19:12] susanreads: The idea for the lesson is identifying similarities and differences between their lives and the lives of children their age back in the 1600s.

[19:12] susanreads: On one day, we can read the book aboutSarah Morton...

[19:13] susanreads: then the next lesson, we could read the one about Samuel Morton.Or, we could do it where I (classroom teacher) reads the Sarah Morton

[19:14] susanreads: Sorry...I didn't finish my sentence; Or, we could do it where I (classroom teacher) reads the Sarah Morton one, in class, and then when the kids come to the library, you (the librarian) reads the Samuel Eaton one.

[19:14] dempseym73: Sounds great so far. Students can use a mind-map to brainstorm ideas before the lesson and use a Venn diagram to complete the assignment. Dr, M likes mind maps and graphic organizers.

[19:14] susanreads: I think I called him Samuel Morton--I meant Samuel Eaton.

[19:14] susanreads: Yes, excellent--and maybe they could do it on the webspiration..

[19:15] susanreads: They can compare the life of a pilgrim boy to a life of a pilgrim girl first, for guided practice...

[19:16] susanreads: And then, the boys can compare/contrast their lives to Samuel's, and the girls can compare their lives to Sarah's--this would be independent practice--

[19:16] susanreads: This would be one we could create a rubric for. She has a site for us to review guidelines for creating rubrics, but I haven't been able to go to it yet

[19:17] dempseym73: We have time for that. The first thing we need to do is look at the rubric for A.4.1 and come up with our scenario.

[19:18] susanreads: You're right; I was thinking about that, and I was thinking that I (classroom teacher) could approach you in the library...

[19:18] susanreads: And ask you for some lesson ideas to incorporate the Thanksgiving history into a fourth grade TEK...

[19:19] susanreads: Let me paste was I typed on the assignment sheet, to guide us, so far:

[19:20] susanreads: To prepare for the collaboration:

1. Determine a grade level. Grade 4

2. Decide on a “role.” One person can take the perspective of a classroom teacher; the other can take the perspective of the school librarian. (It is my belief—and in my experience—these roles are not as distinct after a collaborative partnership has developed over time.) Susan: Classroom Teacher; Mandy: librarian

3. Identify learning outcomes by identifying content-area state standards (TEKS or other state standards) and AASL standards, strands, and indicators.

TEKS:

(H) draw inferences such as conclusions or generalizations and support them with text evidence and experience (4-8);

(I) find similarities and differences across texts such as in treatment, scope, or organization (4-8);

AASL Standards:

Standard One: Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge

Standard Two: Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge

AASL Strands:

Strand One: Skills

Strand Two: Dispositions

Strand Four: Self-Assessment Strategies

AASL Indicators:

(Skills):

1.1.1 Follow and inquiry-based process in seeking knowledge in curricular subjects, and make the real world connection for using this process in own life.

1.1.2 Use prior and background knowledge as context for new learning.

1.1.9 Collaborate with others to broaden and deepen understanding.

(Dispositions in Action):

1.2.1 Display initiative and engagement by posing questions and investigating the answers beyond the collection of superficial facts.

(Responsibilities):

1.3.4 Contribute to the exchange of ideas within the learning community

[19:22] dempseym73: You have been busy. This looks great. However, Dr. M has indicated either in email or feedback that the only standards we include our the ones we will be assessing.

[19:23] susanreads: Good point: I still need to digest all she put in the feedback...

[19:23] susanreads: We can polish this as we go along..

[19:23] susanreads: This is just to get us a start. So I, the classroom teacher approach you. I tell you that I need to teach the similarities/differences TEK, and can you come up with a way to connect it to the Thanksgiving season...

[19:24] susanreads: My motivation: The kids are having trouble making connections across texts, which is an important TAKS skill as well,...

[19:25] dempseym73: What is the motivation for the partnership? Do you need the librarian to find resources/technology/activities?

[19:25] susanreads: Yes, I need you to find resources, since I don't have anything that is something the kids can really get into...

[19:27] dempseym73: I am looking at the rubric-and I think we have everything covered for the motivation and instructional goals. We need to find a planning form we would like to use. Do you use any collaborative planning forms at your school?

[19:27] susanreads: I can type it up in better detail later...

[19:27] susanreads: I like her lesson plan format she provided--have you been able to look at it?

[19:27] susanreads: It's the template she provided

[19:27] dempseym73: Where is it?

[19:28] susanreads: On that PB site she gave us in her email, when she told us she'd revised the rubrics/assignment sheets...

[19:29] susanreads: I went to the site, and scrolled to the bottom of the page to where all the links for the assignment sheets and rubrics were...

[19:29] dempseym73: I am looking it up now.

[19:29] susanreads: and the first one was the lesson plan template...I think! Let me check to make sure I'm remembering right...

[19:30] susanreads: http://ls5443.pbworks.com/A_4_3

[19:31] susanreads: Yes, that's where it is...I just pasted it in my response above so you can go straight to it and not have to search for it, I'm sorry--I should have done that first!

[19:32] susanreads: Once you go to it, scroll down to the bottom of it, and you'll see Lesson Plan Template; take a look and let me know what you think.

[19:32] susanreads: I like it, because it saves time just to use it, and not have to reinvent the wheel.

[19:33] susanreads: It's also very straight-forward.

[19:33] dempseym73: Okay, finally got it loaded up. I like it too. Everything we need is right there for us to fill in. the easy, the better, I say.

[19:33] susanreads: Good deal!

[19:34] susanreads: Can you set up a lesson planning wiki page?

[19:34] susanreads: I'm looking at the assignment sheet now as I type this...

[19:34] dempseym73: Hold on, look at the assignment sheet. I don't think this lesson plan guide is what she wants right now.

[19:35] dempseym73: the page reads, "you will use a collaborative planning form to document your planning process and ideas."

[19:35] susanreads: Okay, then I'm confused. Let's ask her on the discussion board?

[19:36] dempseym73: I don't think we need to ask her. I can't recall if it was this class or one of my others, but there are collaborative planning forms. give me a minute and I will find the one I used previously.

[19:37] susanreads: Also, can you create a scenario page on the wiki? I'll put the URL for our partnership on the BBW Partnerships Project Page

[19:38] dempseym73: I can do that tonight. I haven't yet looked at her sample wiki to see how she wants it set up. But I will do that tonight.

[19:38] susanreads: About the "lesson planning form", she says to refer to Module 1.4==I'll look at that as well later

[19:38] susanreads: Good deal, thanks, I will too

[19:39] susanreads: I think we're in good shape; if you can create the two wiki pages, and I'll post our partnership on the BBW page...we'll both check out the planning form...

[19:40] susanreads: I also think I'll post the log of this conversation on one of the discussion pages

[19:40] susanreads: Now that I think of it, we can paste all our logs on the discussion pages

[19:40] dempseym73: By any chance are you taking LS 5333 this semester? There are links to four collaborative planning forms. I'll type them here for you.

[19:41] susanreads: No, I'm not, so I'd love to see the links

[19:42] dempseym73: I am working on two computers here. It will be faster for me to cut and paste and send it via email than to type it here.

[19:42] susanreads: sounds good!

[19:43] dempseym73: I just sent the email to your TWU email address.

[19:43] susanreads: Why don't you do that, and I'll type of on a word document the scenario I've got in mind, and you can change it and add to it in any way you see fit.

[19:44] susanreads: Good deal; let me take some time later to look at these; I think we've got a good start. I've got to go ahead and plan to hang up soon--I need to get my son to bed...

[19:44] dempseym73: That sounds good. I'll log off here and set up the wiki pages. When you finish up the scenario sheet, you can upload it on the wiki. how does that sound?

[19:44] susanreads: Sounds perfect! You're the best!

[19:45] susanreads: Good night!

[19:45] dempseym73: Right back at you! Do we need to touch base tomorrow night or wait until next week?

[19:45] susanreads: I think we can wait until Monday? What do you think?

[19:46] susanreads: We can always type on the discussion page at any point...

[19:46] susanreads: but we'll formally "meebo" Monday...

[19:46] susanreads: how does that sound?

[19:47] dempseym73: We can wait until next week to meebo, but I am going to the MNF game Monday night so let's say Tuesday night. Is 8:30 too late for you?

[19:48] susanreads: Tuesday night is fine with me, but isn't that your daughter's ballet night? No, 830 isn't too late...but would you rather do it Sunday because of the ballet?

[19:49] dempseym73: that sounds great. sunday night it is. I'll say goodnight so you can put the little one to bed. I have one who is supposed to be in bed right now but somehow is in here with me playing with play dough.

I went ahead and posted it on the scenario's discussion page, if that's okay.
I think we're about ready to go. You just need to add your strengths to the bottom of the scenario page. Also, the instructions say, about the planning form, "provide link to a wiki page with your blank or partially completed form". Ours will be blank for now. I still don't know how to link pages onto other pages--like you did with having the link to the scenario page onto the Collaboration LP page. So, I didn't great a new page, because it looks like you know how to do that. For now, I uploaded the planning form and embedded it on the scenario wiki page.
