I'm confused... Dec 3, 2009 9:21:03 PM CST Mandy Dempsey: If so, I have an introductory activity that incorporates two of her Motivation activities from different lessons. Dec 3, 2009 9:21:12 PM CST Susan Norman: Oh! Let me look at her book real quick to refresh my memory about her motivation activities Dec 3, 2009 9:21:54 PM CST Mandy Dempsey: Motivation is a heading in her lesson plans from CS4RC Dec 3, 2009 9:21:55 PM CST Susan Norman: okay, got it! I'm sure it's great! Dec 3, 2009 9:22:55 PM CST Susan Norman: I was confused because when you said "motivation", I was stuck thinking about the motivation of the teacher coming to the librarian, and had a little block there... Dec 3, 2009 9:24:23 PM CST Mandy Dempsey: Using the link from the pilgrim pathfinder, we play audio of "pilgrim talk." We then ask students what these "common" sayings mean, display answers on smartboard. Dec 3, 2009 9:24:46 PM CST Susan Norman: Awesome! Dec 3, 2009 9:25:00 PM CST Susan Norman: Perfect. Dec 3, 2009 9:25:05 PM CST Susan Norman: Do you want to go ahead and add it to the introductory activity part on the planning sheet....and... Dec 3, 2009 9:25:40 PM CST Mandy Dempsey: We then show students the anchor books, read the title, author, illustrator. Then ask students what they already know about pilgrims. Think-pair-share in groups of 4. Dec 3, 2009 9:25:46 PM CST Mandy Dempsey: Groups use the pilgrim pathfinder to show students images of pilgrims and build background knowledge. Dec 3, 2009 9:26:43 PM CST Susan Norman: Even better! So do we want that to be a part of the teacher's responsibility, since she'll be showing the first book? Dec 3, 2009 9:27:05 PM CST Mandy Dempsey: I think this should be joint responsiblity. I could be the one playing the audio, and you can be the one recording the students' answers from think-pair-share. Dec 3, 2009 9:28:44 PM CST Susan Norman: Good deal; so we need to set it up so that we're in the library for both books... Dec 3, 2009 9:29:40 PM CST Mandy Dempsey: I think that is a good idea. Instead of working with the whole class, we can divide the class according to gender since we want girls to compare/contrast with pilgrim girl and vice versa. I was thinking it would be good for both genders to see both books... Dec 3, 2009 9:32:45 PM CST Mandy Dempsey: Each of us will read both books to our groups. We can let it sink it this week...and maybe have them put it in an animoto or glogster... Dec 3, 2009 9:41:13 PM CST Susan Norman: I guess the thing for tonight is, how much of this last part do we want to elaborate on in the collab. planning form? Dec 3, 2009 9:41:42 PM CST Mandy Dempsey: Good idea, we can leave the presentation tool up to the student. We can give them a list and let them choose. Dec 3, 2009 9:41:51 PM CST Mandy Dempsey: I will add the introductory activity to the lesson form and then add the web 2.0 tool for a presentation in the culminating activity section.
What do you think about for this part? Were you able to find any websites? Or, do you think maybe we could have something like "show examples of things that a pilgrim boy or girl would have needed or used"? In the books, there are pages that show all the layers of clothes they wore, (for example, they had to tie a pocket around their clothes, since pockets weren't sewed on the clothes themselves; it has a picture of the girl churning butter, making Indian cornbread--and it has the recibe included--pounding spices, writing with chalk on a slate, milking a cow, holding a doll.In the book about the boy, it shows him setting a snare to trap a rabbit (called a coney), gathering firewood, binding and carrying the rye harvested by his father (even though his hands are sore from it--which he doesn't want to admit to his dad, since he wants to his dad to think he's tough)meeting two Indian girls, collecting mussels for dinner, which sting his hands that are full of blisters and sores from binding the rye, not being able to go home from all this work until dark. Their discipline is talked about, too. For example, the girl is not allowed to sit during dinner; also, she says she can't talk unless she's spoken to, and, that she's gotten the switch for talking out of turn. Also, while the boy says he gets schooling from his dad at home, the girls says that she's lucky that her stepdad is teaching her to read and write, since usually no one taught girls.
Susan, I taught in Katy a few years back and the fourth grade students took a field trip to the Outdoor Learning Center.
